In 1949 the first Rose Float, Rocking Horse, had a budget of $258 and only 90 days to build.A leader in sustainability, Cal Poly Pomona is among the top 3 California universities in sustainability performance.The Voorhis Unit of Cal Poly opened in 1938 with about 100 students and faculty – all men.In 1972, the library rented typewriters and calculators to students.In 1925, W.K. Kellogg purchased 377 acres in Pomona for his Arabian horse ranch. Decades later, Cal Poly Pomona continues to breed Arabian horses and host Sunday horse shows.New buildings are coming soon: student housing, a second parking structure, a new student services building, and the Bronco Recreation and Intramural Complex.Julian McPhee, president of the two Cal Poly campuses in the late 1930s, developed a learn-by-doing method of education.Cal Poly Pomona has captured 14 national team titles, more than any other current Division II institution in California.In June 2014, Cal Poly Pomona will hold its 58th annual Commencement Ceremonies, welcoming new members into its 130,000-person alumni family.
