International Transfer Requirements

Cal Poly Pomona requires all transfers to complete the following by spring prior to fall enrollment:

  • Must be in good academic standing at the last institution attended.
  • Must have minimum 2.00 GPA in transferable coursework.
  • Must have at least minimum of 60 transferable semester units (90 quarter).
    • 30 of the 60 semester units (45 quarter), must be in General Education.
    • Completion of the "Golden Four."

Additional criteria may be required for impacted majors that must be completed with a "C-" or higher.

Cal Poly Pomona does not accept students who have completed a Bachelor's degree and are interested in a 2nd Bachelor's.  We encourage you to consider a Graduate degree.  

Golden Four

Complete, with a grade of "C-" or higher, a basic public speaking course or other communication course.

Complete, with a grade of "C-" or higher, a English composition course that emphasizes essay writing or reading and writing concurrently.

Complete, with a grade of "C-" or higher, a second semester composition or writing course, or a course in reasoning and effective argumentative writing. 

All Engineering majors are exempt from completing Critical Thinking as a part of the admission requirements.

Complete, with a grade of "C-" or higher, a mathematics course above the level of intermediate algebra.

Due to cancellations of in-person testing worldwide as a result of COVID-19, Cal Poly Pomona has approved the temporary use of the Duolingo test. Duolingo test can be taken in lieu of the TOEFL or IELTS by June 30, 2020. 

Undergraduate Minimum Duolingo Score: 95 

Transfer applicants who are required to demonstrate English Proficiency for Fall 2020 can make use of this temporary accommodation or submit a TOEFL or IELTS score, if available.

TOEFL & IELTS

All applicants, regardless of citizenship, who have not completed at least three years of full-time enrollment at a secondary and/or college/university level where English is the principal language of instruction are required to meet minimum English proficiency. Required scores and exams accepted are:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)                  71 ibt

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)      6.0 

English Proficiency Waiver

Exempt countries where English is the national language include: Antigua, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Botswana, Canada (except Québec), Ghana, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Nigeria, Scotland, South Africa, Trinidad, the United Kingdom, the United States, Virgin Islands and Wales.

If all transfer criteria (60 units and “Golden Four” with grade of C- or better) have been completed at a U.S. institution, then the language requirement will be waived. 

If some of your transfer criteria (60 units and “Golden Four” with grade of C- or better) have been completed at a foreign college or university, then you must take the TOEFL or IELTS exam and earn the minimum score indicated above.  Please have your scores sent to Cal Poly Pomona directly from the test agency.
