Pre-Veterinary Club

About This Club

The Pre-Veterinary Club was founded in 1971 and is an active member of the APVMA (American Pre-Veterinary Medical Association). It is currently the largest club in the Animal Science Department. This year there are approximately 100 active members who participate in the various club activities held during the year. The activities of the club are primarily geared towards exposing the students to the various aspects and options available to them within the field of veterinary medicine.

Members are kept busy during the year with numerous club activities including fund-raising and participating in many other socially entertaining events. Our main event every year is a trip to the National Pre Vet Symposium, which is held at a different veterinary school each year. This year it is hosted by Ohio University. Some of the schools we’ve visited in the past include: Purdue University, Mississippi State University, North Carolina State University, and University of Florida. Some of our meetings include guest speakers such as practicing veterinarians, the director of the Santa Ana Zoo, and professors from the AVS department. Our club holds educational labs on topics such as palpation and suture techniques. During spring quarter, we invite students who have been accepted to vet school to speak and answer questions about their journey to being accepted. We hold social events out side of school including bowling, broomball, lunches, and tv tapings. We have taken some educational field trips, including but not limited to, to UC Davis Veterinary School, the Helen Woodward Center in Del Mar, and the San Diego Wild Animal Park . The Pre-Veterinary Club also participates in volunteer activities such as the Lanterman Development facility, Upland Pet Adoption Fair, Inland Valley Humane Society Holiday Pet Drive, and the Inland Valley Dog-Walk-A-Thon.

Cal Poly graduates have traditionally been very successful at being accepted into various schools of veterinary medicine throughout the nation. This year the club will start a tradition of sending the list of active members to all veterinary schools. The Pre-Vet Club always welcomes new members and encourages participation in all activities sponsored by the Animal Science Department. The club meets every other Thursday throughout the school year.
