Becoming a Special Education Teacher

The Cal Poly Pomona Difference

  • Current issues and best practices: Our program outcomes are aligned with relevant and important issues to the field:

    • Adapting standards-based instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse students

    • Collaboration with students, families, and service-providers

    • Evidence-based practices for students with disabilities

    • Multi-tiered systems of support for students with disabilities

    • Data-driven Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)

  • Expert, dedicated, and engaged faculty: Our faculty have over 50 combined years of experience in the field of special education. Program faculty are active members of professional organizations. We are committed to your success and we provide personalized support to help you succeed!

  • Practice-based experiences: Research demonstrates teacher candidates are more effective and more likely to stay in the profession when learning is connected to classroom practice. Through the seamless integration of theory to practice, you will apply what you learn with students in K-12 classroom settings.

  • Strong district partnerships: Our faculty are active members of partner district advisory boards. Our graduates are sought after by our district partners including Baldwin Park, El Monte, Hacienda La Puente, Pomona USD, Upland USD, Walnut Valley and others.

  • Flexible and blended-learning: All of our core program courses are hybrid courses, with 50% of the class meetings online and 50% face-to-face. Our core program courses are offered in evenings, making it easier for working students.

  • Innovative technology and tools integration: We integrate 21st century knowledge and skills. You will learn to use a variety of tools, platforms, and assistive technologies to support students with disabilities.

  • Master’s in Special Education Program eligibility: Transfer seamlessly into the MA program upon completion of all coursework and acceptance into the program. Our credential program graduates are given priority admission.
