Gate Crasher Challenge

Robot Expo 2015 Gate Crasher challenge

Students must program their robot to pass through a gate that opens briefly on a specified schedule. Success requires programming a robot to travel at the correct speed, which must be calculated based on the distance to be traveled in the designated amount of time.

Related Mathematics

  • Understanding rate
  • Interpreting graphical representations
  • Understanding linear equations
  • Using proportions to solve problems

 Common Core State Standards

7th Grade: Ratios and Proportional Relationships

8th Grade: Expressions and Equations

Algebra 1: Interpret functions that arise in applications in terms of the context.

XBOT Challenge

Robot Expo 2015 XBOT challenge

Students are instructed to program their robot to travel a specified path composed of straightaways and turns. Distance and turn calculations are programmed using robot-wheel rotations as the base unit of measure.

Related Mathematics

  • Using proportions to solve problems
  • Converting one unit of measurement to another
  • Problem solving and calculations involving decimals and fractions
  • Understanding place value

Common Core State Standards

5th Grade: Number and Operations – Fractions

6th Grade: Ratios and Proportional Relationships

SUMO Challenge

Robot Expo 2015 Sumo challengeStudents design, build and program their LEGO robot to push the opponent off a circular fighting ring. An effective robot must have fast reflexes, brute strength, and the ability to seek out its opponent.

Related Mathematics
