Liberal Studies Department Hiring Pool

Job Announcement

Position Title: Part-Time Instructors

Job Summary:  The Liberal Studies Department at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona is accepting application for its hiring pool for temporary, part-time instructors. Liberal Studies Department in the College of Education and Integrative Studies is committed to developing the traits of a comprehensive liberal arts education adapted for 21st century life. Specifically, the department curriculum emphasizes knowledge, dispositions and skills from a traditional liberal arts education such as a sense of the past, a “vast catalogue” of knowledge and information across disciplines, inquiry skills, aesthetics, an ethical perspective, reasoning, independent thinking, civic responsibility, reading, writing, problem solving, open-mindedness, and connectivity (the ability to connect like and disparate ideas). All these skills are crucial today for working in professional settings and serving in communities.

The department has a multidisciplinary faculty (English, history, sociology and education) that values student-centered and/or learner-centered teaching. Liberal Studies majors are undergraduate elementary teacher candidates acquiring their subject matter course work or students who have multiple disciplinary interests and desire a broad education. Teaching in the department provides an opportunity for disciplinary faculty to incorporate an interdisciplinary perspective, which often generates creativity and flexibility in a course curriculum.

We seek candidates with experience in undergraduate teaching in humanities, social science or natural science disciplines and experience with or a strong desire to learn interdisciplinary methods, preferably in a liberal arts setting.  Adjunct lecturers may be asked to teach appropriate Liberal Studies core courses (eight in total) in line with their expertise.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Evidence of recent strong competence in undergraduate teaching

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Several terms of recent undergraduate teaching using an interdisciplinary approach

    • ability to develop a sense of community in the classroom and strong rapport with students
    • a strong command of instructional technology (Blackboard, social media, iPads, etc…)
    • a strong sense of collegiality
    • ability to assess teaching and learning effectiveness and revise instruction accordingly

The following items must be included as part of the application.

  1. Application of academic employment required by the university

  2. Letter of interest decribing how one meets the minimum and preferred qualifications

  3. Unofficial transcript of conferred degree

  4. At least 2-5 student evaluations and/or peer evaluations within the last three years as a demonstration of teaching competency
