Social Justice Board Plays Pivotal Role in Developing CEIS Strategic Plan

The College of Education and Integrative Studies created a Social Justice Advisory Board (SJAB) to increase visibility, cohesion and collaboration across departments in CEIS, as well as to expand CEIS’s distinctiveness and community-based work at Cal Poly Pomona and throughout the city of Pomona. The board also seeks to have CEIS develop a prominent identity in the region as a social justice leader, building on the college’s already existing strengths.

Since its formation in 2019, SJAB has completed a semester-long study in spring 2019, which found that CEIS is strong in its social justice orientation, student-centered pedagogies and professional hands-on training of students. The 62-page report also provides a list of action items and recommendations, which are designed to take CEIS to the next level. The group also formed a new mission statement for CEIS, which was approved last spring.

Currently, SJAB is focused on creating a new values statement for CEIS, which has involved several in-person workshops with faculty and staff over the past year. SJABrecently held another workshop with faculty and staff at the CEIS all-college meeting, and are preparing to conduct a workshop with student leaders this month.

Further, SJAB plans to implement additional action items including forming a partnership with the Downtown Pomona Center, developing a lecture series, an in-house presentation series and forging new relationships with on-campus centers for community engagement and service-learning.

"It is exciting to see a group of faculty, staff and students evolve from a task force to promote a distinctive identity into a powerful instrument for change,” said CEIS Dean Jeff Passe. “SJAB will be a key player in developing the college's new strategic plan."

SJAB is comprised of faculty, staff, students and administrators from every department. The members include: José Aguilar-Hernandez, Christina Chavez-Reyes, Chloe Chu, Hend Gilli-Elewy, Eden Haywood-Bird, Rodney Hume-Dawson, Hyeryung Hwang, Shayda Kafai, Cheryl Love, Eligio Martinez, Marlene Melinte, Marcela Moreno, Giselle Navarro-Cruz, Jeff Roy (co-chair), Maya Stovall (co-chair), Heather Taylor and Karina Tostado.

As co-chair of SJAB, Assistant Professor Jeff Roy said the board’s collective goals and activities align with his scholarly work.

“As a teacher, artist and scholar, I am committed to collaborative, community-based work that enriches students' hands-on learning experiences,” he said. “Recently this has involved forging relationships with arts education organizations in Pomona, writing grants for service-learning and working collaboratively with Associate Professor Teresa Lloro to involve liberal studies students in developing a participatory documentary film and media platform on food justice in the Pomona Valley.”

SJAB is always seeking additional members to support its efforts. All new members must be from CEIS. Anyone interested should email jcroy@cpp.edu or mayastovall@cpp.edu
