The Memoirs of the conman and counterfeiter Stephen Burroughs achieved a surprising degree of popularity in the U.S. at the turn of the nineteenth century. This talk explored the effects of early celebrity culture on the autobiography of one of the period’s most notorious criminals. Dr. Hunter is Assistant Professor of English at Cal Tech.
