Mariachi Los Broncos

Mariachi Los Broncos de Pomona is Cal Poly Pomona's premiere mariachi ensemble. Relaunched in January of 2016, the student ensemble has quickly become a popular ensemble across CPP's campus.

Los Broncos typically consists of 15-20 students. The ensemble studies a variety of Mexican musical genres (e.g., son jalisciense, ranchera, corrido, bolero ranchero, huapango, etc.). Members of Los Broncos have also collaborated with other Cal Poly Pomona music ensembles, such as the Cal Poly Pomona Concert Choir, the Cal Poly Pomona Music Theater Workshop, and the CPP Bands. Los Broncos regularly performs on campus with Los Caballeros, and on occasion, students form small ensembles/combos that study and perform other Mexican regional styles (e.g., música sierreña).

The ensemble is open to students of any major and background who play a standard mariachi instrument (i.e., violin, trumpet, guitarrón, arpa, vihuela, nylon-string guitar) or another instrument that works well in the mariachi style (e.g., flute, accordion). Everyone is required to sing (as part of the group coros or as a soloist). Enrollment is by audition-only, which may be scheduled with Dr. Vallejo (jmvallejo at cpp dot edu). Students should demonstrate technical facility on their main instrument (or on voice), as well as a combination of strong aural skills (learning by ear) and experience with note reading. Knowledge of Spanish is helpful but not required. Knowledge of baile folklórico is also helpful but not required.

Students may enroll in MU 3580A-01 once approved through an audition with Dr. Vallejo. The class is typically held on Tuesday evenings, 5-6:50pm.

For audition information and requirements, see Audition Information.
