Oral Presenter Etiquette

Dress: Business casual or “smart casual” is recommended for formal presentations.

Practice Makes Perfect

  • Practice your presentation within the allotted time.
  • Slides are there to help the audience follow along and remind you what the key points are.  Do not read the slides word for word!
  • Elaborate for the audience as you would for someone new to your discipline.
  • Be careful of the color schemes and contrast you choose for text, graphs, backgrounds, and pictures.
  • Arrive early! This will provide you the time to locate your room, make any adjustments or corrections before starting, and help you get accustomed to the space you will be presenting in.

Respect Other Presenter's Time

  • If the answer to a question will take much time, provide a brief answer and let the asker know you would not mind answering in more detail afterward.
  • Be aware of the moderators and cue cards or other systems they may employ to notify you of time.

Respect Audience Questions

  • Think of possible questions and be ready to answer them.
  • If you are unsure of the answer to a question, respond with, "We will definitely consider that in future research", or you can add "...but if you like, I can get back to you on that after the presentation."

Remember to Breathe... and have fun!

Poster Presenter Etiquette

Dress Business casual or smart casual is recommended for formal presentations.

Practice the Elevator Pitch for your project

  • As a presenter, it is your responsibility to welcome viewers to your poster.
  • Speak loud enough to be heard and slow enough to be understood.
  • Practice a 30-60 second elevator pitch, describing your project in simpler terms and ideas.
  • Be ready for follow-up questions based on your pitch.

Receive Feedback Constructively

  • Think of possible questions and be ready to answer them.
  • If you are unsure of the answer to a question, respond with, "We will definitely consider that in future research", or you can add, "...but if you like, I can get back to you on that after the presentation."
  • Keep a notebook or list of ideas that you would like to reflect on from your conversations.

Remember to Network... Conferences are a great opportunity to meet like-minded individuals!

Audience Etiquette

  • Give your undivided attention to the presenter.
  • Keep noise to a minimum and respect the presenter's time.
  • Please turn off your cell phones and any other electronic devices such as laptops or tablets while the presenters are presenting.
  • Please refrain from whispering or having discussions amongst other audience members.
  • Be aware of the schedule of presenters to arrive early.
  • Questions are encouraged, but if your question will take a significant amount of time, talk to the presenter after the presentations.

From the 10 East

Take exit 41 to merge onto Kellogg Dr toward Cal Poly Pomona.
Turn right onto Palm Drive to enter Parking Structure 1.

From the 10 West

Take exit 41 for Kellogg Dr.
Use any lane to turn left onto Kellogg Dr.
Turn right onto Palm Drive to enter Parking Structure 1.

From the 57 South

Use the right lane to take exit 20 for Temple Ave.
Use the right 2 lanes to turn right onto W. Temple Ave.
Turn right into the parking structure on Temple Ave.

From the 57 North

Take exit 20 for Temple Ave.
Use the left 2 lanes to turn left onto W. Temple Ave.
Turn right into the parking structure on Temple Ave

From the 71 North

Take exit 14A toward I-10 E/San Bernardino/Holt Ave - Valley B1.
Turn left onto Valley Blvd.
Turn right onto Kellogg Dr.
Turn left onto Palm Drive to enter Parking Structure 1.
