Leadership Program

Activities

Developing your leadership knowledge, skills, and attitudes can be completed in a variety of ways.  This can be through attending workshops, leading in student clubs, participating in student competition teams and attending classes with leadership lessons embedded in the course content.  The activities described below include opportunities to be instructed as well as to develop your leadership approach.

Starting Fall 2023, the Engineering Leadership Program is piloting the Career Coaching program funded by alumnus Ahmed Al-Khatib to help students develop career paths beyond their BS degree in engineering.  Benefits include:

  • Five (5) Career coaching sessions
  • Opportunities to connect with engineering professionals (and future employers!)
  • Access to workshop materials beyond the regular student access

Eligible students for the pilot include students around their Junior year in any of the current engineering programs.  Student graduating in Spring of the current school year may be eligible on a case by case basis.  Students graduating in Fall of the current year will not have enough time to complete the coaching program and therefore are not eligible.

The Engineering Leadership Program offers workshops nearly every Friday during the semester.  All workshops are held virtually and can be accessed by the appropriate zoom or Microsoft Teams meeting link.  Past workshops include Emotional Intelligence, Presenting Technical Information, Initiating Projects, Building Team Psychological Safety, Identifying and Validating Personal Values, and many more.  To join a workshop, contact us via email and we will connect you to the next meeting!

Students also gain valuable experience by participating in the Bronco Lead Program offered through the Office of Student Life and Cultural Centers.  We work closely with the Bronco Lead program to provide a diverse array of co-curricular leadership learning lessons.

Students can apply their leadership approaches to a semester-long course where upper-class engineering students lead and mentor first and second-year students enrolled in EGR 1000L - Introduction to Engineering Laboratory.  Before the semester starts, Peer Leaders receive training on teaching, leading, and mentoring students.  Over the course of the semester, the peer leaders meet with their student teams during their assigned EGR 1000L class meeting time and assist them with completing the various experiments and projects required in the course.  Each week the peer leaders also meet for three hours to receive additional training throughout the course to improve their awareness and reflect on their performance as a peer leader and the performance of their team.

We accept new peer lead students each spring to start leading teams during the fall semester.  Students must be available to enroll in the 3 unit Peer Leadership course as well as be available to meet with the assigned section of EGR 1000L.  Peer Leaders receive a stipend for completing the summer training program and also for completing a semester as a peer leader.  Interested students can email us for more information.

Students interested in helping shape the Engineering Leadership Program can apply to be an Al-Khatib Student Leadership Fellow.  Leadership fellows help advance the engineering leadership program by helping us build the library of leadership lessons - a collection of mini-case studies used by faculty to teach leadership principles in the classroom.  Leadership Fellows also support the program by helping plan and execute workshops, track student learning, and assess program goals. 

Student Leadership Fellows are compensated through the Al-Khatib Leadership Fellow grant up to 20 hours per week (during the semester) or up to 40 hours during off periods (winter and summer breaks).  Opportunities to apply are posted on Handshake.  Email us for more information.
