Financial Aid Enrollment Requirements

Select your academic career below to review the impact of enrollment on your financial aid. You must be enrolled in the number of units indicated as "full award" in order for grants and loans to disburse automatically. If you are on a waitlist, those units are not counted towards your total enrolled units. If you are not able to enroll in the units required for "full award," your financial aid will be reduced to reflect your enrollment status . This is a manual process that is usually completed after the last day to drop without a petition (census date).
To review award descriptions and eligibility requirements, visit our types of aid page and select your academic career. Below is your responsibilities if you drop classes after your financial aid has been disbursed. Please note, dropping classes, failing classes, and taking classes you don't need can all have an impact on your Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). If you fall below SAP, all state and federal financial aid will be canceled.

Undergraduate Students (expand/collapse)

If you are a graduating undergraduate student in your final academic year and are ONLY enrolling for one of the two semesters during that year (only fall OR only spring), please review our impact of enrollment on financial aid policy to see how your loans will be affected.

*Please note for students with Pell Grant - there are some circumstances when you will not be eligible for any Pell grant funds at less than half time enrollment. For example you could be eligible for a reduced Pell grant with enrollment of 9 units and not be eligible for any reduced Pell grant at 4 units. This calculation is based on your EFC (expected family contribution).

Credential Students (expand/collapse)

In order to receive financial aid funding, you must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 units of credential coursework that is required by the State of California to receive a professional certification or licensing credential. Financial Aid is not available for prerequisite courses, courses that are suggested as beneficial, or elective courses.

Enrollment for Credential Students is reviewed at Census each semester.  If you are enrolled in less than 12 units of eligible coursework at Census, you may be required to repay some, or all, of the aid you previously received for the semester.

Your responsibilities if you drop all of your units (withdraw) during the semester

If you are receiving Financial Aid and withdraw from classes, a “Return To Title IV” calculation will be performed on your financial aid file, this is a Federal Regulation. The Calculation will determine the amount of disbursed funds you are able to keep and what funds you will need to return. In some cases, you may be eligible for a “post withdrawal” refund. The Calculation is run up through the 60% point of the semester. If you drop after the 60% point, no calculation is done since you have “earned” 100% of your financial aid for that semester. Students who never “officially” withdraw from the University will be calculated at the 50% point of the semester.

If you drop prior to the beginning of the semester, all aid for that semester will be canceled.

Please note: Your withdrawal may affect your Satisfactory Academic Progress and your ability to be eligible for financial aid for the upcoming Academic Year.
