Out-Laws of Physics Scholarship Fund

The Out-Laws of Physics Scholarship Fund has been established at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, with proceeds from performances of the Out-Laws of Physics band and generous contributions of individuals. The Fund's guidelines are as follows:

The Out-Laws of Physics Scholarship Fund provides support for Cal Poly Pomona physics majors who show exceptional promise as future physicists and/or physics teachers, as indicated by one or more of the following: high grades in physics and/or mathematics courses, exceptional laboratory skills, substantial computational proficiency, superior special project(s) work, unusual creativity, and outstanding oral or written communication ability.

Students cannot apply for this award. Rather, nominations will be made by Cal Poly Pomona Physics Department faculty. By a closed ballot vote, the Physics Department faculty will select one scholarship recipient annually, preferably during the Fall Quarter, but no later than the Winter Quarter.

The amount of the award will be 10% of the balance at the time of nomination, rounded to the nearest $100, but neither less than $500 nor more than $1000. If the fund's balance is lower than $500 during the Fall and Winter Quarters of any given academic year, an Out-Laws of Physics Scholarship will not be awarded that academic year.

In January 2007, the fund had just over $5000 in it. In July 2008, the fund balance was approaching $14000, and in January 2010 it was over $17000. The goal is to reach endowment level, whereby scholarships are funded from annual interest earnings.
