- After completing all the steps below, click on Step 7 and sign up for a group OPT application day
To apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT), students must indicate the date they want the work authorization to begin. Here’s how to determine when to begin work authorization:
- Program End Date (graduation): students have 60 days after the last day of the last quarter to begin work authorization (OPT). Decide if you want to start working sometime between day 1 and day 59 after graduation.
- 90 Day Processing: The application takes 90 days to process by USCIS.
- Count back 90 days from the date you choose as a start date for when to apply.
The question becomes, do you want to go to work immediately after graduation? Then choose an early start date. Or do you want more time before you start work? Choose a late start date. Whichever date you chose, count back 90 days for when to apply. This gives USCIS enough time to process the application before your start date.
When you call to schedule an appointment with an International Student Advisor, you must tell the person scheduling the appointment the date you want the OPT to begin.
You can also download an excel sheet to plan your OPT dates from the Study in the States website.
