J-1 Incoming Exchange Student Admissions

Plan 1 Only students from our exchange partner university can participate in the exchange program. Please refer to our list of exchange partners.
2 Check Eligibilties and requirements with the exchange program coordinator at your university. 

Requirements from Cal Poly Pomona:
(all documents in English) 

3 J-1 Undergraduate Exchange Student Application PDF
Copy of Passport page showing your photo, full legal name and place of birth

Proof of Financial Support - A current bank letter or statement in English must accompany your application showing at least $7,000 U.S. dollars on deposit for each semester (term) you will attend Cal Poly Pomona. 

Official Transcripts (in English) 
Passport Size Photo (Size 2 inch x 2 inch) 
Official TOEFL Score 

All students must include proof of English language proficiency by submitting a recent computer based TOEFL test score of at least 71 internet-based, 197 computer-based, or 527-530 paper-based. 

Students from the following countries are exempt: Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, and the U.K. More information about the TOEFL test can be found at:

Health Insurance Coverage. You must have health insurance coverage for your entire length of stay in the US 

Students are required to purchase an approved policy through the Cal Poly Pomona International Center upon arrival at a competitive premium of approximately $250.00 per quarter (this fee is subject to change) 


Insurance purchased in your home country must include the following: 

  • Must have your own name on the insurance card (in English)
  • $50,000 medical coverage per sickness or accident
  • $10,000 for medical evacuation
  • $7,500 for repatriation of remains to home country
  • Maximum deductible of $500 per accident or illness

Submit 4 Turn in all the necessary forms and documents to the exchange coordinator at your University. 

We will review the application and documents and send acceptance letter to your exchange coordinator if you are accepted. 

After being accepted 

Pre-Departure  6 We will contact you to make neccessary arrangements for your study here at Cal Poly Pomona. 

You can view your housing options and let us know which housing you prefer. Please apply for housing ONLY after consulting with us. 

Make sure you submit a proof of immunization PDF directly to Student Health Services. 

Purchase health insurance from your country or with Cal Poly Pomona. → "Enroll Online Now!" → Choose "Cal Poly Pomona" → Enroll in the exchange policy 

Post-Arrival 7

Bring the following to the International Center, Building 1, Room 104 once you arrive: 

8 Attend orientation (Dates are TBA)
