1. When does the application to become a President's Discovery Fellow available?
The application to become a President's Discovery Fellow will be available during spring quarter of every academic year.

2. I attended orientation, what is the next step?

*If you attended freshmen orientation, the next step will be to enroll in the LIB 150 course.  The LIB 150 course will be offered every quarter during the academic year.

*If you attended transfer orientation, the next step will be to enroll in the Projects Training Course (PTC).  The PTC will be offered once a year.

3. Do I have to participate in a group project or can it be an individual project?
We don't have a requirement for group vs. individual project, and this is entirely up to you.

4. Is this a college/major specific program?
This is not a college/major specific program, and we encourage students from all disciplines to participate and apply.

5. Are there any guidelines for selecting a project?

We are looking primarily that the project addresses all three of the following: impacts the community, involves research, and has a potential for innovation. We encourage you to take a look at the rubric scale that is used to judge applicants.

6. Can I take any First Year Experience (FYE) course, or does it have to be the Learn Through Discovery Library 150 FYE course?
You can enroll and participate in any FYE course, and be eligible to apply to become a President's Discovery Fellow (although a FYE course is not mandatory, it is highly encouraged).

7. What is the length of the process before I apply to become a President's  Discovery Fellow?

If you are a freshman, it will be about two years, and if you are a transfer student it will be about 1 year. Please see below for a detailed explanation depending on your situation:

Freshmen:

  • You will enroll and participate in a FYE course in the first year
  • You will enroll and participate in a PTC in the second year
  • You will apply to become a President's Discovery Fellow in the spring quarter of your second year
  • If selected, your fellowship will be in the third year

Transfer:

  • You will enroll and participate in a PTC in your first year at CPP
  • You will apply to become a President's Discovery Fellow in the spring quarter of your first year
  • If selected, your fellowship will be in your second year at CPP

8. Can I apply to become a President's Discovery Fellow without having taken the FYE or PTC?
Everyone is eligible to apply to become a President's Discovery Fellow, but taking the courses makes you a stronger candidate.

9. If I am in a group project and we become President's Discovery Fellow, do we each receive up to a $7,000 scholarship or does the entire group split the scholarship?
The scholarship is per project funding, not per person.
  • For projects involving 1 or 2 students: $4,000 to share among participants based on application budget.
  • For projects involving 3 or more students: $7,000 to share among participants based on application budget.

10. Can graduate students apply for the President's Discovery Fellowship?
Graduate students are eligible to apply, so long as, at least half of his/her team are undergraduate students.
