Dr. Laurie S. Starkey
| Professor, teaching Organic Chemistry
lecture and laboratory classes.
In addition to authoring an introductory organic synthesis textbook (2nd edition). I have developed online lab tutorials, Blackboard online prelab quizzes, organic chemistry "clicker" questions (zip files), and online organic chemistry lectures for Educator.com. As you can probably tell, I am a strong proponent for using technology to support student success, and I have created a repository of active learning resources for Organic Chemistry, called LOCAL. I am also Cal Poly Pomona's Calibrated Peer Review (CPR) administrator, I served as a peer reviewer for MERLOT, and I enjoy giving chemistry career presentations. I earned my Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at UCLA in 1996 and my B.S. degree in Chemistry from the University of Connecticut, Storrs, in 1991. I have been teaching at Cal Poly Pomona since 1996.
My greatest joy is teaching and I am honored to have received the Provost's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2013 (video and Teaching with Technology presentation).
I am actively involved as an advisor to Cal Poly's chemistry club, the Student Members of the American Chemical Society (SMACS) and the Pre-Dental Society.
My research interests lie in the area of Chemical Education. Mainly, I focus on developing and assessing online learning tools, writing questions for Classroom Response Systems ("Clickers"), and developing new lab experiments in the area of Synthetic Organic Chemistry. For my Ph.D., I worked with Professor Mike Jung at UCLA.
These days, my personal life revolves around my family. We love the outdoors and we do a lot of traveling every summer. I also enjoy golfing, going to the movies, camping, snorkeling, going whale watching and watching football (I'm a big Dallas Cowboys fan). My biggest hobby is collecting PEZ dispensers!
