PLS 3175: "NGOs & Social Service Outreach" Fall Semester 2022

Past International NGO Fieldwork in India: January 3-16, 2023
Students will spend 8 days in Mumbai, India and 3 days in Dubai during the winter intercession to study International Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). Students will listen to lectures and did field research with students at the University of Mumbai, toured the Dharavi slums, and volunteer with local NGOs. Students signed up for the pre-requisite course, PLS 3175 (74110): "NGOs and Social Service Outreach" in the Fall Semester 2022, Tuesdays: 5:30-8:15 p.m. Students will created their own nonprofit organization in this course. Students also learned how to write grant proposals. This course examined the missions of international NGOs such as Doctors Without Borders, MAP International, The Red Cross, The Salvation Army, World Vision, Habitat for Humanity, CARE, Oxfam, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation among other NGOs. At the end of this course, students traveled to Mumbai during the winter intercession to observe India-based International NGOs and volunteer in these organizations. Students who participated in the India program registered for CLS 4990-05 (3 units) in the Spring Semester 2023.
Approximate Program Cost: $3,200 (includes airfare, lodging, food, insurance)
Financial Aid: because this fieldwork experience is integrated with the Spring Semester 2022 course, financial aid from Spring 2022 can be used for this trip.
