You may seek grade forgiveness through repeating a course. When you ask for forgiveness for a course, the grade and the units will not be calculated into the GPA. The forgiven grade will appear on the transcript. However, after the grade forgiveness is completed the new grade will be used in the GPA calculation. You are only given 16 units of grade forgiveness. It is your responsibility to seek grade forgiveness; it is not done automatically. An Advisor must sign off on the form and you must submit it to the Registrar’s Office. You may only submit grade forgiveness after you have repeated the course and received a grade. Consult an Advisor in the Advising Center (Building 3, Room 1645) for more information.
You may use a Course Substitution form when you believe that the work you did in a class at a previous institution is comparable to a course at Cal Poly Pomona. You will need to provide a course description, course syllabus, and in some case assignments. You can also use the course substitution form if you want an elective course taken at Cal Poly Pomona to count for a major requirement. It is preferred the petition is filled out online. The Department Chair of the CPP course that is being requested to be substituted, your Advisor, the Department Chair and your College Dean are all required to sign the petition. Only in some circumstances does Academic Programs submit a final approval. Consult an Advisor in the Advising Center (Building 3, Room 1645) for more information.
General Academic Petitions are used for other items that are requiring petitioning that cannot otherwise be completed through a course substitution form.
The Leave of Absence petition must be submitted if you are planning to be gone for more than two quarters. You must be in good standing (2.0 for undergraduate, 3.0 for graduate) and the reasons must be medical, financial or to pursue a professional/academic opportunity. Consult an Advisor in the Advising Center (Building 3, Room 1645) for more information.
You cannot repeat a course that you passed with a “C” or better. You are also only allowed to take a course for a maximum of three attempts. You can attempt to waive the requirements if they feel they have a strong case (i.e. the course is preventing graduation). Consult an Advisor in the Advising Center (Building 3, Room 1645) for more information.
A Retroactive Withdrawal allows you to petition to withdraw from all classes in one or more quarters after those quarters have ended. You must apply for retroactive withdrawal within one calendar year from the last day of the quarter you unofficially withdrew from your classes and provide a clear explanation of why you did not withdraw from the university by filing out the petition with Academic Programs during the quarter(s) in question. Consult an Advisor in the Advising Center (Building 3, Room 1645) for more information.
