CEMaST Brown Bag Science & Math Education Discussion
Wednesday - May 23, 2018 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Please come join CEMaST for an important Brown Bag Science & Math Education Discussion to promote the success of women in the STEM fields entitled:
Professional Skills for Women: Communication and Negotiation
The discussion will be held in Building 4, floor 2, room 314 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. on Wednesday, May 23rd.
Our presenter is Dr. Homeyra Sadaghiani, an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Cal Poly Pomona. Dr. Sadaghiani has recently been awarded a 4-year National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to conduct research and develop adaptable curricula bridging instructional paradigms in Quantum Mechanics.
Abstract: Too often women do not ask for equal compensation for the same work tasks. With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), American Physical Society (APS) women are being trained in physics to host professional skills seminars for females in STEM and related fields. The primary goal of this workshop is to produce more women leaders in STEM and to help these women achieve their full potential in the top ranks of their profession. As an APS Professional Skills Development apprentice, Dr. Sadaghiani will discuss effective negotiation, communication, and leadership skills. This will be an interactive workshop in which we discuss specific negotiation strategies and tactics that are useful for achieving professional goals. Participants are encouraged to bring examples of difficult professional situations to discuss. Female students in STEM are strongly encouraged to attend.
Bring your brown bag lunch. Light refreshments will be served.
