Monthly Star Parties at CPP

Join Students and Faculty for a Tour of the Night Sky!

Mar 9, 2017 7:00 PM to Mar 9, 2017 9:00 PM at Building 8, Roof (accessed via ground floor freight elevator entrance)

On the 2nd Thursday of each month, please join our student telescope operators for an evening tour of the night sky. Members of the CPP community are invited to bring their families and friends to the Building 8 roof to view the night sky through powerful telescopes and learn about astronomy from our students and faculty. The roof will be open for two hours beginning at sunset. These events are free and open to the general public. No RSVP necessary.

  • What? Observe planets, star clusters, nebulae, the Moon, and other celestial objects using the Department of Physics & Astronomy’s 10” and 8” telescopes.
  • When? Every 2nd Thursday during the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters, weather permitting*.
  • Where? Roof of Building 8, College of Science, accessed via the freight elevator from the ground floor. For safety reasons, guests will be escorted to and from the roof. Elevator shuttles will run on the hour and half-hour for the duration of each event.

Sponsored by the CPP chapters of the Society of Physics Students and the Planetary Society.

*We will only open the roof if the sky is clear and there is no rain in the forecast. For up-to-date information on whether we will be open on a given Thursday, please follow us on social media:

A Poly Post article featured the Rooftop Star Parties of our Physics and Astroonomy students. Jill Sandoval, our Administrative Support Coordinator for the College was quoted: "The students are a wealth of information, and it reflects well on their department. And the young kids just love it since they don’t have access to something like this everyday.”
