Small Particles, Big Questions: Studying Pattern Formation with Colloid Particles

Colloids are all around us – prominent examples include milk, toothpaste, and paint.  They are frequently used in new technologies and serve an important role in basic science research. Colloids are wonderful tools because they can serve as model systems for both experimentalists and theorists to examine the interactions of many particles.  For instance, my work with colloid particles addresses big questions in pattern formation such as:  How do crystals form?  How do materials fail under applied stress?  How does bacteria swarm?  I will start the talk with an introduction to colloids and my computational models of interacting particles in a controlled environment.  Next I will discuss my studies of how defects and stripes form in colloids crystals.  To conclude, I will describe my recent work with models of light-activated colloids, which swim like bacteria and form living crystals, illustrating the future direction of my research and its widespread applicability.
