Luminous Infrared Galaxies, Gas Flows and the Role of Mergers

Brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) are the most massive and luminous galaxies in the local Universe. They are typically found at the center of galaxy clusters and are dominated by old, low-mass stars, and bathed in X-ray emitting hot gas. The hierarchical build-up model of BCGs is supported both by cosmological simulations and their red colors and old ages suggest their stars formed long ago. But, observations of blue star-forming cores, massive AGN, multiple nuclei and many close pairs among cD galaxies locally, highlights that many may still be evolving. In this talk, we will consider the timescale for the formation of BCGs, and look at how they are undergoing changes even today. These galaxies are often dubbed 'red and dead' but we will see why this is may not be the full story.
