Cal-Bridge: A CSU-UC PhD Bridge Program Engaging Underrepresented Students in STEM
Mar 21, 2019 11:00 AM to Mar 21, 2019 12:00 PM at
The level of participation by underrepresented minority (URM) and female students in physics and astronomy PhD programs is shamefully low (2-4% for URM v. 30% in the general population; 20% for women v. 50% in the general population). I will describe Cal-Bridge, a California-wide, multi-institutional CSU-UC PhD Bridge program with the mission of increasing participation of underrepresented minorities and women in astronomy and physics through scholarships, significant mentoring, professional development, and access to summer research opportunities, leading to an increase in their numbers completing bachelor’s degrees, and successfully pursuing a PhD in these fields. A total of 9 Cal Poly Pomona scholars have participated in this program (including 4 current students). Of the 5 who have graduated, 4 are in PhD programs (2 at UC Irvine, 1 at Michigan State Univ., and one at Penn State Univ.) and the fifth is in the Fisk-Vanderbilt Master’s-to-PhD Bridge program and is applying to PhD programs this fall. Applications for the 2019-20 academic year will be due in August 2019 (exact date will be announced later this spring).
