Physicists as Diplomats: US-China Scientific Exchanges from Arms Control to Climate Change
Dec 3, 2015 11:00 AM to Dec 3, 2015 12:00 PM at Building 8, Room 241
In the 1980s, American and Chinese physicists began to engage each other in two momentous areas of contemporary science and politics: nuclear arms control and global climate change. This talk traces the evolution of these transnational scientific interactions and examines the proper roles of scientists in national policy and international diplomacy, the social and political values of transnational ethnic scientific networks, and the possibility of historical learning in policy- making as the world struggles to deal with the threats of both climate change and nuclear proliferation.
