Richness of Diversity

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #1:

Laura has demonstrated time and time again that she is 100% student-centered in her approach to medical care for
Cal Poly Pomona students. First, multiple examples of this can be seen in the medical care she provides to Cal
Poly Pomona students. She is very patient with students who have multiple medical concerns. She practices active
listening and will take as much time as necessary to provide excellent medical service to the students. If a
student needs a resource that is not readily available at Cal Poly Pomona, Laura will work to find the resource they need,
and at the lowest cost possible. She is aware of outside factors that affect the studentsí health and will do her
utmost to assist students so they may achieve academic success. Another example is the efforts Laura has spearheaded
in our department around effective contraceptive choices. She arranged an education session for our staff regarding
long-acting reversible contraceptive options (LARC) and worked with the presenters to access how to get these options
to our students at low or no-cost. She then took the initiative to query our students to gauge interest in these methods.
Thirdly, Laura keeps up to date with medical recommendations and information that could impact our students, and shares
that information with the rest of our staff. Finally, Laura has willingly participated in and helped to foster the social
media outreach of our department. She can be counted on to use these mediums to help students improve their health and
identify needed resources and information.

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #2:
Although ìRichness of Diversityî was named as value #2, the value of ìQualityî is also present in Lauraís work.
Laura has been instrumental in bringing high-quality educational talks and trainings to the SHCS staff. She has reached
out to experts both on and off campus to provide relevant and up to date information so that we may provide better care
for our students. Most notably, these sessions have addressed the diversity present on our campus. Topics have included:
Sexual assault awareness for providers; CPP Cultural Centers; Transgender medicine; Counseling techniques; and HIV-PrEP.
