Silvia Valadez

Fall 2015

I am nominating:Silvia Valadez
Years of Service at Cal Poly: 5
Department:Student Health & Counseling Services
Position: Front Office Assistant
Why are you nominating this person? Why do you think he/she deserves the award?

Silvia is a trooper who tries to ease the burden on her team members. She revamped the
waiting area and relaxation room by giving it her touches of warmth. She brought in her
sewing machine to create window dressings and throw pillows so that students could have a
comfortable place to relax while waiting to be seen by a therapist.

In what way(s) does this person enhance or contribute to the Cal Poly Pomona campus community?

Silvia cares about our students, as evidenced in being concerned with their safety and comfort.
She is a responsible steward of resources, as demonstrated by her spending lots of time sourcing
her materials for projects. She also is generous with her team members, sometimes offering them
tastes of her homemade soup or trying to cover the front desk even when she is not feeling well
to prevent burdening others.

Please select 2 of the 6 Division of Student Affairs values for which your nominee best exemplifies:
Student Centered Philosopy

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #1:

Silvia took great pains to consider the functionality and aesthetics of the waiting are and relaxation
room of Counseling Services. She took into account feedback from previous students regarding how comfortable
they found the waiting area and made careful observations to inform her redecorating project of the waiting area.
For example, she noted that student wouldnít take advantage of joint sitting arrangements (e.g., loveseat),
which oftentimes resulted in one student sitting while another would stand. She resolved this by offering
more single seating options, which seems to be especially appreciated by those who may be more socially reserved.

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #2:

Silvia spent quite a bit of time considering costs and did her due diligence by pricing the resources needed to
prevent creating a financial burden. She also creatively repurposed old furnishings, message boards, etc. and
personally brought in her staple gun, sewing machine, etc. to recycle materials that most others would have tossed
aside. She role modeled being responsible with resources and using creativity to repurpose materials. When given
the option of purchasing new furniture, she found ways to claim unused furnishings from other departments and was
able to move office furniture around the department to give them new life.
