University Police officers are vested with the same powers and responsibilities as all police officers within the state of California. Their authority is granted through legislative action defined in the California Education and Penal Codes. University police officers meet the California Peace Officer’s Standards and Training (POST) Commission requirements mandated for all California law enforcement officers and have full arrest authority. University police officers are trained in the use of weapons and carry them on campus.
University Police jurisdiction covers all property owned and operated by the university, including adjacent public streets and property. University Police has mutual aid agreements and cooperates fully with local and state law enforcement agencies.
Police officers provide support for special events and a conduct a wide range of activities to promote crime prevention and campus safety.
Two Detectives are assigned to the department’s Investigations Bureau. They are responsible for all aspects of case investigation, from developing and following up on leads, interviews, warrant service, conducting search warrants, and preparing cases for filing with the District Attorney’s Office.
The Records Division maintains all police records, the daily log, processes arrests and citations, and submits crime statistics to the Department of Justice. The daily police log is available upon request at Building 109. A weekly media log is provided to the Poly Post.
Copies of police reports are available upon request to authorized individuals for a processing fee of $10.00 ($5.00 for university students/employees). Please allow minimum 10 working days after the report date. Processing time may be delayed due to exigent circumstances. Staffed by POST certified, professional police dispatchers, the 24-hour Communications Center provides telephone and two-way radio contact for law enforcement and emergency personnel. The Communications Center also handles department business/non-emergency calls and serves as an after-hours contact for students, faculty, and staff. Alarm and access systems and fire alarms are also monitored in the Communications Center.
