Estimating Student-Faculty Ratios

SFR = Student-Faculty Ratio = FTES / FTEF
SFR is calculated by dividing Full-Time Equivalent Students (FTES) Taught by Full-Time Equivalent Faculty (FTEF).
FTES = Undergraduate Student x Course Units Taken / 15 -or- FTES = Graduate Student x Course Units Taken / 12

The total FTES Taught is the sum of the FTES taken by each student in each class. When estimating FTES to be taught based on course seats or enrollment, the assumption is made that all students in an undergraduate course will be undergraduate students, and all students in a graduate course will be graduate students. Actual FTES taught is calculated student-by-student and will vary somewhat from enrollment-based estimates.

FTEF is defined to be equal to the FAD report Instructional Faculty Fraction (IFF).
Instructional Faculty Fraction (IFF) = Faculty Appointment Fraction – Instructional Administrative Fraction (IAF) – Other Support Fraction (OSF)
FTEF is calculated by taking the faculty member’s appointment fraction, subtracting any IAF, and subtracting any OSF.

The Faculty Appointment Fraction is:

  • 1.0 for a full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty member.
  • calculated for a lecturer by dividing the contracted WTU (Weighted Teaching Units) by 15. The WTU for a course is determined by the type of course and the number of hours per week that it meets. Example: A 4-unit lecture course = 4 WTU = 0.27 appointment fraction. A 1-unit lab course = 2 WTU = 0.13 appointment fraction.
  • the FERP appointment fraction specified in the FERP appointment for the quarter. A FERP faculty member teaching full-time for one quarter would be have an appointment fraction of 1.0 that quarter, zero in other quarters. A FERP teaching half-time all year would have an appointment fraction of 0.5 each quarter.

Instructional Administrative Fraction (IAF) = Appointment Fraction for Administrative duties, such as those of a department chair.
IAF is listed as a specific fraction in the faculty member's appointment.
Other Support Fraction (OSF) = Appointment Fraction for Grant-funded research, for Teaching not paid by the General Fund, or for Other duties not paid by instructional funding. OSF =

Assigned WTU / 15 for Assigned Time reported in this category. If OSF Assigned Time WTU are replaced by lecturer WTU hired with externally reimbursed funding, there will be no change in the resulting SFR.
Assigned Time reported in any other category has no effect on the Faculty Appointment Fraction.

The Academic Affairs Budget Allocation makes use of SFR to project the relationship between FTEF and FTES:

  • Given an SFR and FTEF, the expected FTES taught can be calculated: FTES = SFR x FTEF
  • Given an SFR and FTES (goal or actual), the expected FTEF needed can be calculated: FTEF = FTES / SFR
