Shape-Shifting Guitars

Music professor Peter Yates performs on the arpeggione or bowed guitar.

Peter Yates presents a chamber music concert featuring the guitar, bowed guitar (arpeggione) and electric guitar on Friday, March 5. The concert features the premiere performances of "Furiously Strumming," for mandolin and guitar by Garry Eister and Yates' song cycle "Seven Victorians, Four Cranks and a Crone."

The show is at 8 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall. Tickets are $15 for general admission or $10 for students and can be purchased online at https://csupomona.tix.com/, at the Music Publicity Office in Building 24-142, or an hour prior to show time at the box office.

The evening opens with a new trio by Jonathon Grasse for arpeggione, various oboes (played by Richard Kravchak from Cal State Dominguez Hills) and mandolin (played by faculty artist Buzz Gravelle). Bach's second gamba sonata follows, performed on the arpeggione and accompanied by faculty artist Nadia Shpachenko at the harpsichord.

Other faculty collaborators are Janine Riveire and Dave Kopplin. Guest artists include Tom Flaherty, cello; Cynthia Fogg, viola; Abigail Villalta, voice; Matthew Elgart, guitar; and Richard Kravchak, oboe.

The texts of "Seven Victorians, Four Cranks and a Crone" are an eclectic mix, ranging from the musings by Karl Marx and Black Elk to imaginary letters to the editor about tainted seafood and the earth falling into the sun. The piece calls for vocals, piano, contrabass, percussion, cello and viola.
