Longtime university supporters and Panda Restaurant Group co-founders Andrew and Peggy Cherng have pledged $2.5 million to The Collins College of Hospitality Management, President Ortiz announces in his Monday video message. Matched by Carol and Jim Collins, the pledge is effectively worth $5 million and allows the college to begin work on a new $10 million educational complex.
The president announces several recent major gifts to the university:
- $1 million from alumnus Doug Ramsey to support lab space in the new College of Business Administration building.
- $100,000 gift to the Chevy Goldstein Scholarly Fund.
- $35,000 from Joel Benkie, National Development Council member and Parker Aerospace vice president. His gift will be matched by parent company Parker Hannifin for a total of $70,000.
During his video message, the president also discusses plans for I&IT, including the search for a new chief information officer and the moving of the eLearning unit to Academic Affairs.
The president visited Corona Community Church yesterday along with Deborah Brandon, executive director of Outreach & Admissions, and Cal Poly Pomona student Matt Bennett. It was an opportunity to share about the power of higher education and opportunities in the CSU and Cal Poly Pomona. The "Super Sunday" events are part of a CSU-wide effort to encourage students to pursue a college education.
Another recent visit by the president was with Assemblywoman Norma Torres last Friday. The president and ASI Lobby Corps representatives advocated for education with the legislator at her Chino office.
The president invites the campus community to watch upcoming post-season basketball games. The California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament begins tomorrow, with the men playing at San Francisco State, while the women will host Cal State Stanislaus at Kellogg Gym at 7 p.m.
