Cal Poly Pomona students made yet another impressive showing by sending one of the largest contingents to the 23rd Annual Southern California Conferences for Undergraduate Research.
This marks the ninth consecutive year that Cal Poly Pomona has fielded one of the largest groups of presenters. A total of 166 Cal Poly Pomona students presented their work at Harvey Mudd College on Nov. 21, with 47 oral presentations and 32 poster presentations. Joining the students at the event were 48 faculty members.
"Sharing research results is an essential part of the undergraduate research experience," says Winny Dong, director of the Office of Undergraduate Research at Cal Poly Pomona. "I really enjoyed seeing our students' presentations and their passion for the cutting-edge research they are conducting."
The departments with the highest number of oral presentations were aerospace engineering (10), civil engineering (six), psychology and sociology (four), and English and foreign languages (four).
Oral presentation titles included "Energy-Based Design of Bridges with Seismic Isolation" by Nathan Jo and faculty mentor Giuseppe Lomiento (Department of Civil Engineering) and "A Window Into Women in the Feline Form" by Jessica Santos and faculty mentor Dewey Hall (Department of English and foreign languages).
The departments with the highest number of poster presentations were biological sciences (10), geological sciences (four) and animal and veterinary sciences (four).
The poster presentations included "Antibiotic Sensitivity of Bacterial Pathogens Isolated from Bovine Mastitis Milk" by April Aquino and faculty mentor Shelton Murinda (Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences) and "Characterizing the Shallow Subsurface Along the Hollywood Fault Zone" by geology students Nahtaly Pastrana and Terry Cheiffetz.
The next opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to showcase their research will be at the Cal Poly Pomona Student RSCA (Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Conference on March 4, 2016. There will be oral, performance and poster presentations. A reception will follow the presentations.
