Custodial Services will perform a one-time deep cleaning of campus facilities before staff members repopulate the campus on Aug. 2 and students and faculty return for the fall semester several weeks later.
The tasks involved in the deep cleaning during July is intended to help the university recover from 16 months of low occupancy. The deep cleaning will include:
- Interior high dusting, including air vents
- Glass doors and panels at entryway
- Indoor glass panels
- Window blinds
- Light diffusers of lighting fixtures
"The COVID-19 pandemic has been a challenge for everyone," said Aaron Klemm, the senior associate vice president of Facilities Planning & Management (FP&M). "The vast majority of staff members at FP&M, including Custodial Services staff, were designated as essential workers. These teammates were on site throughout the pandemic while most campus staff members worked from home. Custodial staff duties changed to adapt to a depopulated campus, and the team is taking on additional duties to prepare for campus repopulation."
When the one-time deep cleaning is completed before campus repopulation, Custodial Services will return to a schedule of routine cleaning and tasks. The routine cleaning frequency and tasks are:

Custodial Services is a part of FP&M (Facilities Planning & Management), which aims to provide safe, clean, efficient, effective and sustainable spaces for the university in alignment with the campus Strategic Plan. Custodial Services maintains nearly 2.3 million state-supported square feet with 54 full-time and part-time staff members. That means each custodian cleans 42,882 square feet, which is significantly more than many other peer CSU institutions.
"At Cal Poly Pomona, maintaining safe, clean and effective facilities is a team effort and a shared responsibility," Klemm said. "Let us know when an issue needs attention, and together we can meet our shared goals."
If departments require services above the one-time deep cleaning and routine cleaning levels, FP&M does provide additional service for a fee. Requests can be sent to FP&M's Customer Service Center by emailing fmcustomer@cpp.edu or by calling 909-869-3030.
During the pandemic, Custodial Services adjusted its duties to align with Safer Return cleaning protocols and Los Angeles County Department of Public Health guidelines. Visit Safer Return's Health and Safety Plan webpage to learn more.
