In Memoriam: Stanley Gibb
Professor Emeritus Stanley Garth Gibb, a cherished member of the Cal Poly Pomona community, died July 6., He was 84.
Gibb served as a professor of music at Cal Poly Pomona from 1974 to 2006, where he was a cornerstone of the Department of Music. His expertise spanned music theory, composition, technology, business, and percussion performance. His passion for innovation led him to establish the university's first music technology lab, a resource that has continued to benefit students long after his retirement. Gibb was also a master vibraphonist, performing with numerous jazz ensembles and orchestras throughout his life, bringing his love for music to both the classroom and the stage.
Beyond his technical and performance contributions, Gibb was known for his dedication to his students and his ability to inspire future generations of musicians. He was deeply committed to fostering a supportive and creative environment, encouraging students to explore the intersections of music, technology, and business. His work not only enriched the academic programs at Cal Poly Pomona but also prepared his students to thrive in a rapidly evolving musical landscape.
Gibb’s legacy at Cal Poly Pomona is one of innovation, dedication, and a profound love for music. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Andrea, their four children, 23 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. His contributions to the university and the broader music community continue to resonate, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of learning from and working with him.
