CPP Students and Animals Take Center Stage at LA County Fair

CPP sheep arrive at the Big Red Barn at the LA County Fair.

The Huntley College of Agriculture’s students and livestock will take the spotlight this month at the LA County Fair!

Cal Poly Pomona students unload the trailer with baby goats at the LA County Fair. The college will bring its farm animals to the Big Red Barn, including pregnant cows and ewes that are expected to give birth during the fair. In addition, there will be a sow with piglets and the college’s three alpacas.

About 60 students will work at the fair, running the petting zoo – traditionally one of the most popular attractions – performing bottle-feeding demonstrations, taking caring of the animals and answering visitors’ questions.

“Our students gain valuable skills and hands-on experience working with animals at Cal Poly Pomona,” said Kellogg Ranch Director Lisa Christie, who is overseeing the Huntley College’s participation at the fair. “The fair gives them an opportunity to show the public their knowledge.”

That college also will display its knowledge base in exhibits and demonstrations in both the Red and Green Barns.

The apiary program will have its “Life of a Bee” educational exhibit in the Red Barn. Exhibits in the Green Barn include displays from the animal science, apparel merchandising and management, and nutrition and food science programs; a pollinator and plant station; and an aquaponics system.

The college also will have

  • Flower-making activities: 2 p.m., May 9-10
  • Ask Farmer Bryan: noon, May 15 & 29
  • Storytime with Le’Yona: noon, May 23-24, 30-31.

The Bronco Pep Band will make three appearances:

  • 5 p.m., May 8 with Billy the Bronco
  • 5 p.m., May 15
  • CPP Day, May 25.

Discounted fair tickets are available for sale to Cal Poly Pomona students at the Bronco Bookstore for $20.
