Civil Engineering Associate Professor Yongping Zhang is interviewed about a Mineta Transportation Institute study he led and co-authored, which explored the unique mobility challenges faced by older members of the Asian American Pacific Islander community.
The research found that over half of surveyed AAPI seniors in Southern California avoided certain transportation modes due to concerns about crime and personal safety, along with additional barriers such as physical limitations, traffic hazards, language obstacles and limited awareness of affordable transit options. To address these issues, Zhang recommends that transportation programs provide multi-language websites, registration forms and phone reservation services.
