Power Flex Alert and Energy Conservation Measures Issued for Heatwave

Summary of Flex Alert: The California Independent System Operators, which manage electricity flow across the state, issued a statewide power Flex Alert from 3 to 10 p.m. starting on Monday, Aug. 17, and lasting through Wednesday, Aug. 19. Residents and businesses are urged to conserve power during the heatwave. Southern California Edison may initiate rotating power outages from 3 to 10 p.m. to avoid system overloads. The Flex Alert and rotating power outages could continue if the severe heatwave persists through the week.

Reason for Flex Alert: The heatwave is creating extremely high demand for energy across the state. Cal Poly Pomona was affected by a rotating power outage on Aug. 15 that lasted for 20 minutes.

How does this affect me? Conserve energy from 3 to 10 p.m. during the Flex Alert period. Prepare for an extension of the Flex Alert and rotating power outages if the heatwave continues. Facilities Planning & Management is prepared to mitigate any power outages on campus.

What do I need to do? Cut back on energy use during the 3 to 10 p.m. Flex Alert period.

Work energy conservation tips:

  • When possible, shift power-intensive work to morning hours.
  • Set thermostats to 78°F or higher.
  • Turn off unneeded lighting.
  • Turn off equipment not in use.
  • Charge battery-powered equipment before 3 p.m.

Home energy conservation tips:

  • Set the thermostat to 78 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
  • Turn off unused appliances.
  • Use electric fans instead of air conditioning when practical.
  • Minimize use of lighting when possible.
  • Close drapes and blinds to keep out sunlight during hot periods.
  • Avoid using evaporative coolers or humidifiers at the same time an air conditioner is running.
  • Operate swimming pool equipment and energy-intensive appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines and dryers in the early morning or after 10 p.m.
  • Limit the opening and reopening of refrigerators.
