A new transformative center aimed at revitalizing Pomona’s workforce and empowering local entrepreneurs officially opened in downtown Pomona on Aug. 29. The Cal Poly Pomona Community Innovation Hub, represents a crucial investment in the region, designed to spur growth, innovation, and economic revival.

The Hub will focus on workforce development, with programs designed to upskill and reskill community members in STEAM disciplines. It will also provide access to co-working spaces, essential services, and equipment necessary for business innovation and growth.

The grand opening attracted over 100 attendees, including local business leaders, community members and university representatives. The highlight of the event was the keynote speeches by University President Soraya M. Coley, Congresswoman Norma Torres (CA-35), and Olukemi Sawyerr, associate vice president for the Office of Academic Innovation, which is managing the center.

“The Community Innovation Hub is more than just a physical space,” Sawyerr said. “It’s a platform for collaboration and a catalyst for change. The Hub will not only help individuals gain critical skills but also strengthen the local business ecosystem, ensuring that Pomona thrives in the face of future challenges.”

The Hub will offer workshops and programs aimed at building skills, fostering innovation and promoting entrepreneurial success. They will be open to individuals looking to expand their knowledge and to businesses looking to strengthen their operations.

Beyond these services, the Hub seeks to address the economic challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic by fostering a skilled, diverse workforce ready to support the local economy. By strengthening ties between Cal Poly Pomona and the Pomona community, the Hub aims to be a cornerstone for regional economic recovery.

Attendees at the grand opening toured the facility and previewed the many services the Hub will offer.

The Hub’s creation was made possible through community project funding secured by Congresswoman Torres.
