Professor Vilupanur Ravi from the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering has been honored with the William B. Johnson International Founders Award, the highest recognition accorded to an engineering professional by the Engineers' Council. The prestigious accolade was presented at the Council's 70th Annual Honors and Awards Banquet before hundreds of academic and industry professionals.

Ravi is presented with a William B. Johnson International Founders Award.Ravi becomes just the 29th recipient of this distinguished award since its establishment in 1982. The honor is not given annually, but only when an exceptional candidate emerges—the previous award was presented in 2022. The William B. Johnson International Founders Award was created to honor one of the Council's founders and to recognize individuals who embody engineering excellence and leadership.

The award citation recognized Ravi "for pioneering and innovative research and development of advanced materials, coatings, and corrosion; exceptional and sustained dedication to engineering education and student mentorship; and outstanding service to professional societies."

During his time in the college, Ravi has built a reputation for groundbreaking research in materials science and corrosion engineering while maintaining an unwavering commitment to student success. His work spans both industry and academia, having previously held positions developing cutting-edge materials technology before transitioning to education.

"I consider teaching a sacred profession," said Ravi when asked about the significance of this recognition. "This award means a lot to me, not just as personal validation, but as recognition of the importance of mentoring our next generation of engineers. What has sustained me through all the peaks and valleys of my career is the conviction that this is a noble service—molding our future generation. My students are my living legacy, and I am indeed privileged to have the opportunity to guide them through this important stage of their lives."

Under Ravi's leadership, countless undergraduate and graduate students have experienced hands-on research opportunities that might otherwise be reserved for advanced graduate institutions. Many of his students, particularly first-generation college attendees, have gone on to successful careers in industry or continued to graduate studies.

Ravi continues to lead research initiatives in advanced materials and corrosion at Cal Poly Pomona while teaching and mentoring students.
