Ivana Cvetkovic Selected as Fulbright Scholar to Portugal
Ivana Cvetkovic, an associate professor of multimedia journalism, has received a prestigious Fulbright Scholar Award to Portugal in spring 2027.
Based at the Escola Superior de Comunicação Social of the Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa, Cvetkovic will use the opportunity to expand her research into news reporting on agriculture, interviewing journalists about how they cover agricultural news and farmer communities, including their use of social media outlets and online outlets to disseminate news.
Like California, Portugal is a leader in agriculture, being a major producer and exporter of cork, olive oil, tomato paste and wine. They are also an important member of the European Union “from farm to fork” initiative, with 80% of farms being family-owned.
“The Fulbright is a wonderful opportunity for a cross-cultural comparison of journalism practices in Portugal and in California, which will be a key focus of a larger research project,” said Cvetkovic. “I am very excited for this opportunity to teach and collaborate with colleagues from another polytechnic institution.”
A former reporter, Cvetkovic’s research and teaching interests are at the intersection of media, technology and culture; growing online and social media news reporting, and multimedia journalism.
The Fulbright U.S. Scholars program is an international academic exchange of scholars and professionals founded to increase mutual understanding and to support friendly relations between people from the United States and other countries. It is administered by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
Since the Fulbright Scholar Exchange was established in the 1953-54 academic year, 46 Cal Poly Pomona faculty have participated.
In 2024-25, Communications Professor Sunny Lie Owens received a U.S. Fulbright Scholar Award to Jakarta, Indonesia, where she studied biases in languages that create and reinforce power and taught intercultural communication and critical theory at Jakarta State University (Universitas Negeri Jakarta).
