Audition and Scholarship Information

Entrance Auditions

Students from diverse musical backgrounds study at Cal Poly Pomona. Some come to us with a strong foundation in musical performance and wish to pursue a career in performance or teaching. Others come to us with backgrounds in composition, electronic music, music production, music business, or songwriting, and then build on those skills at Cal Poly to explore a career in the music industry. At every level, we seek musical, vibrant learners who will seize the opportunity to improve their skills and artistry.

Music Industry Studies option students are required to audition for acceptance. (For details, see MIS Applicants Audition Requirement. Auditions are held in early February, eligible applicants are contacted in January about audition dates and times.

Music students are also required to audition for studio instruction (individual instruction on an instrument or voice), scholarships, and ensembles. All music students perform in at least one of our 18 ensembles which encompass a variety of styles and traditions.

All students arrive with some facility on their instrument or voice. Those with a strong foundation in performance may choose to audition for studio in their first year. Others wait until they have completed theory and class piano, and audition for studio in their second year.
