Mathematics and Statistics

Undergraduate Students

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers a flexible major program designed to serve a variety of needs and interests. A student may develop an academic program to prepare oneself for employment in industry, government, and education.

Students are urged to select electives to prepare for graduate study either in mathematics or a quantitative discipline in the sciences, engineering, economics or business. To this end, courses at the 500-level are available as part of the Graduate Program.

The Department recommends that each student use electives to develop depth in a discipline other than mathematics. Transfer students should complete as many calculus courses as possible before attending Cal Poly Pomona. Physics courses to be transferred should require calculus concurrently or as a prerequisite.

A high school student planning to major mathematics should complete one year of physics, one year of chemistry, and four years of mathematics, including thorough preparation in trigonometry and algebra.

Students majoring in mathematics and who have at least a 3.0 GPA may join the honorary society  Kappa Mu Epsilon (KME) as well as the local chapter of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). Additional information can be obtained from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
