Modern Web Development

HTML5

Overview

The Modern Web Development (MWD) Certificate program gives you the core concepts and practical techniques critical in developing modern web applications. Learn how to use front-end technologies to create websites that employ the latest HTML standards and presentation styles, incorporate rich user experience, deliver social content, and respond to both desktop and mobile devices. Learn also how to use server-side programming, such as ASP.net, PHP, JSP, and so on, to develop context-sensitive, database-driven, search engine friendly, service components integrated, and secure web applications in corporate intranets, extranets, and e-commerce settings.

The MWD certificate will be awarded to individuals who successfully complete two required and one elective course. Individual, stand- alone course certificates are also available for those who have had adequate experience in web development and wish to focus on one or more special subjects covered in these individual courses.

The courses in the Modern Web Development Certificate Program include:

Required Courses (2)

Description: As the client-side web technologies advance, web browsers are modernized accordingly to be able to present information in a more structured, interactive, and useful manner. Web developers need to acquire skills in the proper use of the latest HTML standards, presentation styles, and JavaScript programming techniques to provide a rich user experience and deliver social content. In this course, you will learn: HTML5 and CSS3 User experience design Wireframes, usability, and prototypes JavaScript libraries Building social context using social APIs.

Prerequisites: Basic understanding of computer programming and systems analysis. (Students will need to bring their own laptop computer to class.)

Description: Establishing an informational web presence is only the first step in today’s web development. Limited by the thin and insecure web front-end, modern businesses must develop server-side web applications to process and manage complex business logic and corporate data made available only on the server. In the context of electronic commerce, the server-side web applications must be search engine optimized and able to integrate with other service components across systems or business partners. In this course, you will learn: HTTP protocols and web server environments Online database design and programming E-commerce applications development Search Engine Optimization Web API programming.

Prerequisites: Successfully completed MWD110 - Client-Side Web Development or have previously acquired equivalent understanding of HTML and CSS, JavaScript, a programming language (e.g., C++, VB.net, Java), and database concept. (Students will need to bring their own laptop computer to class.)

Elective Courses (2)

Description: Responsive Web Design (RWD) is the new design paradigm for modern websites. Developing a web design that can precisely display a webpage across a large array of user agents, such as desktop computers, mobile phones and tablets, is becoming an essential part of the web development process. In this course you will learn: RWD applications and strategies User agent detection and feature detection Fluid layout and media queries Responsive images and content RWD tools and templates.

Prerequisites: Basic understanding of client-side web development (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript). (Students will need to bring their own computer to class.)

Description: Today's web platform offers more risks to expose corporate programs and data from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, destruction, modification, and disruption. Research has found that insecure web applications are being developed by web programmers who lack adequate security training. Modern web developers need to understand how web applications are vulnerable, how attacks are performed, and how defense measures are to be deployed to mitigate these attacks. In this course, you will learn: Identification of Web application vulnerabilities and threats. Analysis and demos of OWASPs top 10 web application security risks. Systematic Identification of security requirements. Development and deployment of appropriate security mechanisms in the logic, coding, testing, and debugging of Web applications. Prerequisite: Basic understanding of both client-side and server-side web development.

Prerequisites: Successfully completed MWD130 - Server-Side Web Applications or have previously acquired equivalent understanding of server-side scripting (e.g., ASP.net, PHP, JSP, etc.). (Students will need to bring their own computer to class.)

Benefits / Objectives

According to US Department of Labor, computer specialists, such as web designers, web developers, and web application security specialists, are projected to be one of the fastest growing occupations over the next decade. Through the courses in this MWD certificate, you’ll gain necessary knowledge and skills to start or advance a career as a modern web developer.

Intended Audience

This certificate (two required courses and one elective course) is designed for those who are looking to become involved in the web development field, as well as those who wish to further their current knowledge. Individual course certificates are also available for those who have had adequate experience in web development and wish to focus on one or more special subjects covered in these individual courses.

Awarded Certificate

The Modern Web Development Certificate will be awarded to individuals who successfully complete the required two courses and one elective course. Individual course certificates will be awarded to those who successfully complete the individual courses.
