The Student Innovation Idea Labs (SIIL) recently celebrated a milestone 10 years in the making.

The 10-Year Anniversary Celebration, held on April 24 at the Maker Studio, brought together students, alumni, staff, faculty, and community partners to honor a decade of student-powered innovation, entrepreneurship, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Yao Olive Li, director of Student Innovation Idea Labs, reflected on the significance of the celebration.

“The 10-Year Anniversary of Student Innovation Idea Labs was more than a celebration—it was a powerful reminder of what happens when students are given the space to dream, create, and lead,” Li said. “ILab's 10-year journey reflects our commitment to transforming student potential into real-world impact.”

The event featured a lively student showcase, interactive demonstrations, and an Ice Cream Pitch Challenge. Students pitched imaginative ice cream flavors with compelling business plans, blending creativity and entrepreneurship in true SIIL spirit.

Camille McCurry, food and science technology major and participant of the challenge, shared what the experience was like.

“Presenting our final product and business concept at the SIIL 10-year anniversary was an incredible experience,” McCurry said. “It brought our entire journey full circle and truly showcased how SIIL supports innovation and entrepreneurship through hands-on resources and expert guidance. We’re excited to apply the valuable feedback we received from the judges to improve our product as it enters the market.”

For student technicians like Cyrus Kwok, the celebration was both personal and symbolic.

“Being part of the 10-Year Celebration means a lot to me,” Kwok said. “It’s a chance to honor and remember the former students and directors who helped build SIIL into what it is today. It’s also a meaningful moment for me personally, as I hope I’ve contributed to leaving the space and the department better than when I first arrived.”

Li echoed this commitment to experiential learning.

“Seeing students step up with bold ideas during the Ice Cream Pitch Challenge and iStartup Academy reaffirmed the importance of creating spaces where innovation, collaboration, and real-world learning come alive outside the classroom,” she said.

The celebration also honored the evolution of signature programs from Office of Academic Innovation units, including micro-internships and pitch competitions—initiatives designed to equip students with tangible skills, mentorship, and industry-aligned experiences.

As SIIL looks ahead to the next decade, the 10-Year Celebration reaffirmed its mission to empower students as changemakers, equipping them with the tools, community, and creative freedom to turn ideas into lasting impact.
