Strike Ready Checklist
CFA has called a five-day strike from Jan. 22-26, 2024 at all CSU campuses. This checklist will ensure that you are prepared to fully participate in strike action, including knowing your rights as an employee withholding your labor, understanding what it means to strike, and what to do on the picket line. Even if you are not in CFA, you can participate in strike action as a Unit 3 employee.
Education
If this is your first strike or your fourth, make sure you are up to date on what job action means- Refresh yourself on what we are asking for and what management responded with
- Read through CFA statewide's strike action FAQs here
- Read through CFA Pomona's targeted FAQs here
Communication
Communicate early and often with your students and coworkers. As you have questions, refer back to the resources above or reach out to CFA leadership so we can address the issues.- Use the Job Action toolkit to talk to students about the strike
- Strategize with your department for how to communicate to students with a unified message about strike action, preferably sent by your chair to all majors. Get this on a department meeting agenda in advance of the strike.
- Add an out-of-office message on your email and schedule it to begin at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 22 and end at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26
- Schedule an announcement on Canvas for each course you teach. Inform students that you are on strike and will not be holding class; invite them, but do not require them, to join us on the picket line and send them the information below.
- Let your local representatives know that you support CSU dealing fairly with CFA. Find your state representatives here: https://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/
- If you have contacts in local media, encourage them to cover strike action and contact us for quotes or other information
Action
In the weeks leading up to the strike:
- Hang a CFA poster on your doors and in your office windows.
- Use a Strike Ready Zoom background.
- If you have connections to local politicians or community leaders, invite them to support us. Contact the leadership team with details.
On the days of the strike, join us on the picket line.
- Sign up for a picket line shift (link forthcoming)
- Make plans to get to campus without breaking the picket line using our alternate transportation options or using a ride-share. Plan on not parking on campus as we want the parking lots empty.
- On the day of the strike, wear a CFA shirt. If you do not have one, wear red.
- Bring a bag with a water bottle, sunscreen, and snacks. If you are on the last shift in the late afternoon, bring a flashlight. Wear comfortable shoes you can stand and walk in for several hours if possible.
- Bring anything you think would be useful such as a bull horn, noise makers, buckets or hand drums, other instruments, etc. Picket lines should be loud and fun. Bring the fun.
- Be prepared for a safe and controlled job action. Always listen to the picket and safety captains.
- If you are feeling ill, please stay home.
- Do not do any work related to your job at the university including:
- Grading assignments
- Planning lectures or writing assignments
- Writing grant applications
- Writing and working on your research
- Checking, reading, answering, or sending things from your CPP email
- Looking at, editing, or signing into Canvas
- Doing anything that requires DUO, like logging into the library databases
- Do not attend a meeting outside of CPP which benefits CPP through your intellectual contributions. For example, if you are on the editorial board of a journal because of the intellectual work that CPP is not compensating you adequately for, withhold your labor at that meeting and inform your colleagues that you are on strike to get fair pay.
- Do not post on social media about your research or teaching-related information.
- Do not publicize anything about CPP projects, events you are hosting or planning, or jobs you are hiring.
