Theater Event

The Lieutenant Nun

Date: April 25, 2022
Time: 4:00pm to 6:30pm
Location: Main Theatre Building 25

Join us on Monday, April 25, at 4:00pm in the Main Theatre Building 25 for a staged reading of The Lieutenant Nun (La monja alférez), a 17th-century Hispanic play attributed to Mexican playwright Juan Ruíz de Alarcón featuring the real-life character Antonio de Erauso, a trans man and a soldier in the Wars of Chile.

This performance debuts the play's translation to English by our very own Dr. Marta Albalá-Pelegrín and Dr. Edward Test of Boise State University, which will be published next year by Routledge. The staged reading is directed by Armando Molina from the Company of Angels and features CPP theatre students and faculty.

This performance is open to the public, and no RSVP is required. After the performance, stay for a discussion with the cast and translators Rhonda Sharrah, Robin Kello, Laura Muñoz, and Dr. Albalá-Pelegrín, covering the process of collaborative translation for performance, translating trans identities from the Early Modern Period, and decolonizing the text.

This event was made possible by a SPICE Grant. Special thanks to the English & Modern Languages Department (CPP), the Department of Theatre and New Dance (CPP) and Diversifying the Classics (UCLA).
