Break plastic down into pellets. Plastic pellets are recycled into threads. Thread is knitted, cut and sewn into our clothing. Piruli Design started at our very own Cal Poly Pomona Innovation Lab (iLab). Their mission is to change to way the world sees waste. They do this by giving plastics and other waste a new life. Join us as they share their story and mission in opening our eyes about clothing and waste. *Light refreshments while supplies last.

Salvadoran Writers Speak!: Carolina Escamilla

4:00 PM to 5:30 PM - W. Keith & Janet Kellogg University Art Gallery: How do we remember a lost homeland when our memories of it are marked by trauma and violence? How do we construct and reconstruct home and community in Los Angeles when our arrival here is shadowed by exile and racism? Carolina Rivera Escamilla, educator, writer and documentarian, was born in El Salvador, went into exile in the 1980s, completed her studies in English Literature with an emphasis in Creative Writing at the University of California, Los Angeles. Director and producer of the 2011 documentary film Manlio Argueta: Poets and Volcanoes, she is also a cultural promoter in Los Angeles, Calif. She authored the story collection ...after… published in 2015.

Partisan Media and Financial Monopoly in the early

12:00 PM to 1:00 PM - 15-Library, 4th floor, Special Events room 4829: President Andrew Jackson’s Bank War was one of the most important political conflicts in American history prior to the Civil War. In this talk, Dr. Stephen W. Campbell discusses some of the research behind his recently published book, The Bank War and the Partisan Press, which blends political, economic, and media history. As Campbell shows, newspaper editors on both sides of this conflict engaged interregional communications networks funded by public and private money in order to propagate ideas and sustain their livelihoods.
