The George P. Hart Award

About George P. Hart

George P. HartGeorge P. Hart’s tragic and untimely death is indeed a loss to Cal Poly Pomona as well as to his loved ones. He devoted 30 years to the university as a member of the Political Science Department and as associate dean in the College of Arts. He served on the Academic Senate from 1983 to 1995, acting as chair from 1987 through 1989, a position to which he was re-elected shortly before his death. He had also been a member of the California State University Academic Senate since 1990.

George P. Hart received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara and his master of arts in government from the Claremont Graduate School, where he was a member of Phi Sigma Alpha, a Lincoln Foundation Fellow and an Intercollegiate Program of Graduate Studies Fellow. His work on a Ph.D. in political science at Claremont was unfinished at the time of his death.

Professor Hart was very highly regarded. He enjoyed the respect of his colleagues and the admiration of his students. He cared deeply about excellence and Cal Poly Pomona’s academic reputation and worked tirelessly to encourage the active participation of the faculty in the governance of the university. His life serves as a tribute to the pursuit of academic excellence and dedicated leadership.
