Keynote Speaker: Kevin Kelly


Kevin Kelly

Kevin Kelly supports educational institutions in their efforts to adopt technology, enhance distance education, and improve program development and evaluation, with an emphasis on universal design, equity, and inclusion. He is the former Executive Director of Teaching & Learning for the Association of College & University Educators (ACUE), Director of Wiley Learning Institute, and Manager of Academic Technology at SF State. Dr. Kelly completed his Ed.D. in Leadership Studies at the University of San Francisco and is a prolific speaker and author. Kevin will address considerations to ensure that flipping is an inclusive pedagogy rather than a strategy that perpetuates imbalances.

Mohammad Husain

Mohammad Husain

Dr. Husain is an Associate Professor at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Husain is the head of PolySec cybersecurity Lab at CPP. His broad research interest is in Security & Forensics.

He Shen

He Shen

Dr. Shen is an Assistant Professor at California State University, Los Angeles. He completed his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Central Florida, Orlando. Dr. Shen’s research interests are dynamics and controls; robotics and autonomous systems; modeling and simulation; mechatronics and instrument; image processing, and computer vision. He has been integrating Collaborative Project Based Learning into his computer engineering courses.

Carsten Lange

Carsten Lange

Dr. Lange is a Professor at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He completed his Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Hannover, Germany. Dr. Lange’s research interests include Computer Assisted Teaching (CAT), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the European Monetary Union, International Economics, Neural Networks, Real Estate Markets, and Seigniorage.

Nancy Warter-Perez

Nancy Warter-Perez

Dr. Warter-Perez is the chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at California State University, Los Angeles. She completed her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, IL. Dr. Warter-Perez's research interests include compiler techniques for high-performance computing and embedded systems.  Recently she has been involved in projects on engineering educational innovation and research, and she has been dedicated to improving STEM education and outreach, particularly for students from underrepresented and minoritized groups.

Robin Wilson

Robin Wilson

Dr. Wilson is a Professor at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He completed his Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Wilson’s research interests include low-dimensional topology, and he works on math education with a focus on equity and access of underserved youth. Dr. Wilson is involved in a joint CSU project called BAMM! Bolstering the Advancement of Masters in Mathematics to increase the number of students from underrepresented and minoritized groups who pursue doctoral studies in mathematics.

Victoria Bhavsar

Victoria Bhavsar

Victoria Bhavsar is the Director of the Faculty Center for Professional Development at Cal Poly Pomona. She also leads the eLearning team facilitating faculty to use technology that enhances student learning and success. Dr. Bhavsar earned her Ph.D. in Soil Science at the University of Kentucky. She teaches soil science in the Don B. Huntley College of Agriculture, using technology extensively to support a “flipped” methodology. She served as Cal Poly Pomona’s faculty learning community coordinator for the collaborative “First in the World” grant that is supporting Polyteach 2020: Do the Flip!

Silvia Heubach

Silvia Heubach

Dr. Heubach is a Professor at California State University, Los Angeles. She completed her Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Dr. Heubach’s interests include the redesign and teaching of the new mathematics sequence for life sciences majors, flipped teaching in bottleneck STEM courses, and her research spans a number of areas, ranging from operations research to modeling to combinatorics.

Alison Baski

Alison Baski

Dr. Baski is Dean of the College of Science and Professor of Physics at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. She completed her Ph.D. in applied physics from Stanford University. Dr. Baski was recognized as an American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow in 2010 and as an AVS Science and Technology of Materials, Interfaces, and Processing Fellow in 2015 for her “contributions to the fundamental investigation of semiconductor surfaces using scanning probe techniques and for STEM leadership with the university, community and profession.” In 2018 Dr. Baski joined the Board of Directors of ASTRA (Alliance for Science and Technology Research in America) to provide her perspective as a STEM researcher/educator.

Daphne Liu

Daphne Liu

Dr. Liu is a Professor at California State University, Los Angeles. She completed her Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of South Carolina, Columbia. Dr. Liu’s research specialty is in Graph Theory, Combinatorics, and Algebraic Topology. She is a faculty mentor for the NASA CSULA Direct STEM grant (2015-2020), and is involved in a flipped classroom initiative incorporating effective teaching strategies to enhance student learning.

 

Zekeriya Aliyazicioglu

Zeki Aliyazicioglu

Dr. Aliyaciouglu is a Professor at California State Polytechnique University, Pomona. He completed his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Southern Methodist University (1995). Dr. Aliyazicioglu is experienced in digital orthophoto production, photogrammetry, CAD and GIS mapping. His research interests include radar signal processing, the Northrop Grumman Collaboration Project, and promising course redesign to improve student success.
