iLab space

The iLab empowers young minds and provides them with the tools and the courage to make their ideas a reality per their mission to support student creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Since its founding in 2015, the iLab fosters an entrepreneurial ecosystem on the Cal Poly Pomona campus for student innovators, inventors, and entrepreneurs through programming, workshops, mentor networks of alumni and local businesses in the community, and innovative curriculum, such as ESTEAM, a year-long multidisciplinary innovation course, and a NASA Technology Assessment Program.

The iLab is a physical space on the Cal Poly campus where innovative students can meet like-minded peers, develop their ideas, build prototypes, and create new ventures. Additionally, the iLab has partnered with the Pomona Unified School District to open an incubator for student startup teams, called the Innovation Orchard, on the Ganesha High School campus. Overall, the goal of the iLab is to reach beyond the campus walls to engage the community, build partnerships, and engender creativity and entrepreneurialism among young people.

In line with Cal Poly Pomona’s “learn by doing” philosophy, campers in the Entrepreneurship Camp will identify problems that are worth solving and develop the basic tools to create effective solutions to those problems. Campers will learn how to:

  • go from an idea to a prototype
  • engage prospective customers
  • work collaboratively in a team
  • pitch ideas to customers and investors

In addition, campers will be engaged in creating a business model canvas of their idea, utilizing various tools to turn their idea into a prototype, talking to actual prospective customers to gauge their interest in the product/service idea and obtain feedback, and pitching their idea to potential investors. They will also be:

  • taught by Cal Poly Pomona professors who are experts in their respective fields
  • mentored by local business professionals
  • coached by Cal Poly Pomona upper division students as they develop their product/service ideas

The camp counselors are exceptional university students whose characteristics and accomplishments make them well-suited to lead campers in the university entrepreneurship curriculum.

At the end of the week is a pitch competition where campers work in teams to pitch their business ideas before a panel of judges. Family and friends are invited to the pitch competition and awards ceremony. Overall, the Entrepreneurship Camp will shape campers as people, will provide a framework for lifelong learning, and will empower them to solve problems of their generation.
